Petition to the White House: Investigate Jimmy Kimmel Kid's Table Government Shutdown Show on ABC Network

I was very disturbed by Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Kids Table’ show. It was aired on ABC recently and talked about killing all the Chinese so that the states do not need to pay back their debts to China. The kids might not know anything better. However, Jimmy Kimmel and ABC’s management are adults. They had a choice not to air this racist program, which promotes racial hatred. The program is totally unacceptable and it must be cut. A sincere apology must be issued. It is extremely distasteful and this is the same rhetoric used in Nazi Germany against Jewish people. Please immediately cut the show and issue a formal apology.

The White House's official response: What We Have to Say About Jimmy Kimmel

Thank you for your petition. Your petition requested an apology from those involved, and to "cut the show."

The parties involved have already apologized independently. Jimmy Kimmel has apologized on-air, and issued a written apology. ABC has removed the skit from future broadcasts, taken the clip down from online platforms, and detailed several changes in its programming review process in response to this incident. You can find more about Jimmy Kimmel's apology here, and ABC's apology here.

On a broader level, as the President has stated publicly, the United States welcomes the continuing peaceful rise of China. The comments you are writing about do not reflect mainstream views of China in the United States.

The Federal government cannot force ABC to remove this show. The First Amendment of the Constitution protects free speech, even if individuals might personally find it offensive or distasteful. It may be upsetting when people say things we might personally disagree with, but the principle of protected free speech is an important part of who we are as a nation.

If you think this issue merits additional scrutiny, you may file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission by visiting FCC.gov/Complaints. The FCC is an independent agency that regulates the airwaves without input or consideration from the White House.

CAPE's open letter to the White House on the response:

Dear President Obama,

Let us introduce ourselves.  We are a group of community organizers dedicated to safe-guard the civil rights of all Chinese Americans in this country.  We are writing to express our honest feelings towards your recent response to the 100,000+ White House Petitions Against the Jimmy Kimmel Kids' Table Show - 'KILLING ALL CHINESE" episode.

First of all, we appreciate your emphasis that the comments made by Kimmel did not reflect mainstream views of China in the U.S.  However, Chinese Americans have been targets of ridicule and racial discrimination since the 1860's.  Finally, we realized we have to say NO to racism.  We wish that you, Mr. President, would take a strong moral stand on this issue.

Further on in your letter, you have kindly stated that you welcome the continuing peaceful rise of China.  Yet, please be very clear that the movement against ABC/Kimmel has been organized by grassroots civilians determined to safe-guard our civil rights in this country and in turn, promote world peace.  By doing this, hopefully, we would be able to create a safer and better society in which we and our future generations would live and prosper continuously.

After reading your comments, I regret to say that you, evidently, have not carefully studied nor investigated our case.  All the so-called apologies from ABC & Kimmel, either on air or written, were basically camouflages of not admitting their mistakes.  Did you not realize they were repeatedly saying, "Oh, sorry to upset you, but this is entertainment"?  "Killing all Chinese" is not a joke!  It is vicious!!!  "Should we allow the Chinese to live" is a ridiculously insensitive and irresponsible remark!  It is not entertaining!!!

Oh, yes, you mention - Freedom of Speech!  As a matter of fact, we have the utmost respect for America's Fore-fathers who had envisioned the beautiful world of being able to speak freely!  However, are you trying to tell us that Freedom of Speech encompasses the promotion of massive killing and racial hatred & injustice???  Is that the correct interpretation of free speech???

And, to our great disappointment on top of all the above, you refer us to file a complaint with the FCC?  To us, you are trying to dismiss your responsibility to resolve this important nation-wide issue!  For your information, MA Senator Brownsberger has recently stepped up to support our cause and has, thus, written a powerful letter to ABC condemning their wrong-doings and demanding them to fire all related employees of that infamous show.  And, as our President who has the obligations to protect ALL citizens and safe-guard their rights, would you let us down by ignoring our request for justice???

No one can deny that America has been the leading country in the world to welcome and embrace different races and cultures and is able to offer unlimited opportunities to these people to live and flourish on her lands.  If racial hatred and injustice, two primitive and crippling evils, are so prominently present, does America still deserve to hold the title as the enviable leader in this endeavor?  NO, Mr. President!  And, the fact that you are the FIRST U.S. President in history representing the minorities, you should totally understand the difficulties in fighting against racial discrimination in this country which you lead.  We sincerely invite you to engage in a constructive dialogue with our communities and urge you to help us build a peaceful and respectful society for generations to come.

Awaiting your favorable reply.

Yours truly,

Chinese Association for Progress & Equality (CAPE)
